Time to blog

On Laura's guest post, a reader (Henry) commented: I really respect people with blogs and how they have something creative to write and asks:

Reader question: How do you find the time to take pictures and blog?

What a great question, Henry. I'd like to answer your question right now and then leave it open for my fellow bloggers to chime-in in the comments too!

Finding time to take pictures
Luckily for me, I don't necessarily need (though I like) photos to accompany my posts, unless I'm talking about photography, of course ;). Nevertheless, I make an effort to take photos at least once a week. My camera sits on the console table in the living room and is always at-the-ready. Whenever our son and I go outside, for a walk or to the playground, I always bring my camera too.

Most of the time, I tailor posts around the photos I take. Maybe I'll talk about an activity our son is really interested (or not interested) at the time. Maybe I'll talk about the relationship our son has with our puppy, which I do often (see 1, 2, and 3)!

Sometimes, I know we'll be going somewhere where there's going to be photo-ops and remember to bring my camera. Though my phone had to suffice on a recent trip when I left my charged battery in the charger at home. Here's some pictures taken at the National Aquarium (Baltimore) and at the Please Touch Museum (Phila).

Lastly, I may have an idea for a blog post and set-out to take pictures for it…though I can't think of any particular posts where I did that...

So to answer your question, I don't "find" time to take photos. For me, I just take them and use them when appropriate. If you post your own photos, check out Amberr's list of web resources for free-to-use images (with credit, of course).

Finding time to blog
No matter what a blogger does full-time or where a blogger works full-time -- stay-at-home mom/dad, work-from-home, full-time blogger, work-outside-the-home blogger, etc. -- I think I can safely say that finding time to blog is difficult and requires balance and/or sacrifice.

For me, I draft a lot of posts after our son goes to bed. But I have to balance that time (after he goes to bed) with going to the gym, doing house chores, editing photos, spending time with the hubby, and oh, sleeping. It's a busy life, but I enjoy blogging so much that I don't see it as a burden. It's ME time.

As for responding to readers' comments, which for me is just as important as writing, I do that whenever I check my email. And I type fast ;), so it's moot point :P.

My unsolicited advice to a new blogger
Not that he asked, but I'm going to offer some advice to alleviate some fears about starting a blog. It's ok not to post every day. I choose to post every day, except for Saturday, but only because for the past two years, my posting was erratic. I wanted to make a change. Also, quality is better than quantity. Many other bloggers have said this already. And, start off slow and build-up your posting with time. I like how Laura responded to Henry's question on her guest post: I didn't think I would have much to post, but I find that I'm always grabbing my camera because everything I do I now see as a possible blog post! Give it a try - you will find that you have more to talk about than you think. Lastly, making time to blog is one thing, but you also have to remember to make time to build a community of readers. Unfortunately, blogging ISN'T write it, and they will come.

Ok, now YOUR turn:

How do you find time to take photos (if applicable) and blog?

Show some love. Leave a comment below and I'll definitely respond!

  1. i make time to blog but i usually blog when inspired. these days, i don't have much to write about so i don't. it seemed when i was working, i had more to say but now that i'm at home, i don't; go figure!!

however, when the inspiration strikes me, i'll draft up several blog posts and then schedule them to be auto-posted on certain days. i used to blog a lot during down time at work and when dd goes to bed.

  2. If it's something you enjoy doing, whatever it is, you'll always make time for it. Think that's what most bloggers will tell you too - we all love blogging!

It is tricky though sometimes. I draft up and schedule post for certain things, if inspiration's hit me and I've got loads I want to post about.

Photos keep me inspired though. Taking, sharing, looking...

  3. these are great tips and useful info, lisa. i wish you were around when i first started blogging. believe it or not, my first blog was in 2004.... and i stopped blogging after i had my son. (i was miserable being preggers). i, too, try to incorporate some photos that i already took into my posts (the kids....etc.) but if it's my outfit post, i have to make time to take them... and i prefer to do it when the kids are not around. (usually when they're in school). my living room is empty (no furniture), so i am thinking about making that space a photography space... where i can get some special lighting and take photo whenever i want, w/o always having to go out, otherwise, i have to consider the weather, the kids, housework.... etc.)

  4. Thank you for doing this post! I just started my blog in April and it's been so much fun! I am a working mom of 3-year-old twins, so I don't post everyday... usually twice a week. I keep my camera on the kitchen counter so it's easily available, and I also use my phone to take pictures. It is definitely true that you will always find time to do things you enjoy!

  5. Thanks for the post Lisa and for all the comments. It really helped ... but the more and more I read, I'm not sure if I'm really blogger matterial~ I think I'm more of a reader than a story teller! My wife would make a great blogger ... as she loves to do everything you all have descrbed, but not me~ I just like to see the end results of everyone's hard work!! I do appreciate all the insight you all have provided though .. and who knows .. maybe my feelings will change and you'll be reading my blog someday~

  6. Lisa I agree with this entire post and I have no idea how you young moms do it all, I get exhausted reading your blogs, it is that wonderful energy of youth, I am going with that :)

P.S. my head is hurting from trying to Fix my Facebook page, I would love a FanPage and for it to be my actual blog, which is really what I wanted but as you can tell I had no clue when I originally set it up and I am still lost LOL

  7. I always use my phone to take pictures. I'm always taking pictures of Baby C and that's mostly what my blog is about. I usually write blog posts during nap time and after Baby C goes to bed. I feel the same way, it's not work. It's fun and theraputic to me. I like to respond to my blog readers too in my posts, but I don't know how to do it via email like you do. Any tips on that? :)

  8. I was able to do some writing during the day when the kids were in school, but now that school is out I have to write my posts after the kids are in bed or early in the morning. I'm getting a little better at the pictures.

  9. Some bloggers are really good about taking photos specifically for their blog. I'm not one of them. I love taking photographs to document moments of my life. And if those moments make it to my blog, then I'll add a photo or two. I do, however, enjoy finding photos (weheartit is a great resource) to accompany posts that don't have any personal photos on them. No one ever complained about being visually stimulated. =)

  10. it's soo hard to find time to blog now that A is here!! i find myself trying to keep up w/ my schedule from before and i'm just getting burnt out, it's no good! i KNOW it's not imperative to post every day, but i just can't help it!!! :/

  11. Great post Lisa and I do many of the same things as you. I always have a camera on me, either the dslr or a point and shoot (don't leave home without it). I have also written a post around a picture I love. Blogging does mean sacrificing other things but like you I love it so it's worth it. I do more than half of my posts on the weekend as I've been trying to exercise on weekdays after work. So I'm probably home more than most because I have this "hobby" that takes quite a bit of time each week.

    Good advice (as always) girl!
